Transforming a Family Legacy: Red Riding Wood

Red Riding Wood project represents a comprehensive renovation of a family-owned teak garden lodge into a multi-purpose space designed to foster connections across generations. By reimagining the retreat's original architectural and functional elements, the initiative seeks to revitalize the space while preserving its historical and environmental significance.

Originally a family business, the teak garden retreat had served as a cherished space for generations. However, as time passed, the buildings deteriorated, even as the surrounding teak landscape matured into a lush and vibrant ecosystem. Recognizing this contrast, the project aimed to breathe new life into the retreat, harmonizing its built environment with the flourishing natural surroundings.

The renovation focused on a cluster of structures, including two existing pool villas, a newly introduced elevated cottage-style accommodation, a reception building, and a children’s playground. These were strategically integrated into the landscape, respecting the original positions of the teak trees and the anticipated needs of future family activities.

The two original pool villas, which reflected traditional Lanna architectural styles, were preserved but renovated for practicality. The structural framework remained intact, but unnecessary or deteriorating elements, such as an old wooden pavilion, were dismantled. Existing wood from the pavilion was repurposed to construct a more compact pavilion and as trusses for the new reception building's roof, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable design.

Elevated Red Cabin

The newly added elevated cottages provide privacy for guests by situating the main living spaces on the second and third floors. This elevation also offers guests sweeping views of the teak tree canopy, immersing them in the natural beauty of the garden. The facade facing the public areas, including the reception and playground, incorporates frosted glass and a staircase grid for added privacy while maintaining an open view of the rear teak grove.

Aesthetic and Functional Design

The project's design incorporates vibrant red tones, chosen for their complementary contrast to the lush green of the rainy season and the earthy tones of the dry season. These colors symbolize vitality and are applied throughout the project, from the entrance gates to the children's playground and circular seating areas. This deliberate use of red creates visual cohesion, connecting the newly constructed buildings to the existing landscape.

Materials and Local Collaboration

The construction relied heavily on locally sourced materials and craftsmanship. Recycled wood from the dismantled pavilion was a key resource, and the rest of the materials were sourced from nearby hardware stores. This approach not only reduced costs but also emphasized sustainability and community involvement.

The Red Riding Wood project is a testament to the thoughtful integration of architectural restoration and environmental preservation. By respecting the site’s natural and historical context, the initiative has created a dynamic, multi-functional retreat that bridges generations while celebrating the enduring beauty of the teak garden. This harmonious blend of tradition, sustainability, and innovation ensures the legacy of the family retreat will thrive for years to come.
